Protectionist headwinds have catalysted a new financial project for the euro area with the ambition to secure a significant strengthening of the international role of the euro. As the new European Commission takes office, hope is that this ambition will breath new life into the completion of the  Banking Union and Capital Markets Union. The challenge is that the Gordian Knot of a single safe asset sits at the core of all three projects and question is whether this can now be untied.
