The MENA region has long suffered from a high level of violence that have recently intensified and spread further. In addition to human losses and physical destruction, these conflicts have caused deep recessions (Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen), driven up inflation, worsened fiscal and financial positions, and damaged institutions. There are also powerful spillovers on neighboring countries, most notably through a refugee crisis and worsened security. This conference will provide an overview of the economic impact of recent MENA conflicts and the various channels through which they produce their often devastating costs, differentiating between countries in conflict and those affected by its spillovers. Based on that, and drawing on the experience with conflicts and state fragility across the MENA region, policy challenges and priorities will be discussed as well as the role of external partners in supporting efforts to mitigate the economic fallout from the violence and assist countries with post-conflict rebuilding.
